13 Things to Check on Your Turf Mower This Spring
view all newsWe know there is a lot a preparation that happens in spring, so we want to help give a quick list of things to check on your turf mowers before the season starts.
-
Bedknives
Check the condition of the bedknives to see if they’re worn out or damaged. If issues are found on this or any of the following items, our service and parts team are ready to help you get your issues solved quickly.
-
PTO Clutch/Switch
Turn the engine on, engage the blades, and from a distance, make sure the blades are indeed engaged. Blades not moving or any squealing noises may indicate a PTO issue.
-
Drive Belt
To check the condition and tension of a drive belt, first, inspect the belt for signs of wear, cracks, or fraying. Additionally, press down on the belt with moderate pressure; it should give slightly but not excessively, ensuring proper tension for optimal performance. If there is excessive slack or the belt feels too tight, adjustments may be necessary.
-
Drive Shaft
Make sure to grease the drive shaft to ensure proper lubrication for smooth operation and prevent premature wear on the drive shaft components.
-
Filters (Air, Fuel, and Oil)
Check the age and condition of your filters and replace if needed.
-
Air Cooled Engines
If your engine is air cooled, cleaning the fins that cool the engine will prevent overheating of the engine.
-
Liquid Cooled Engines
If your engine is liquid cooled, cleaning the screens that filter the engine will prevent it from overheating. You'll want to make sure the filter is clear of debris. You'll also want to check the coolant level and ensure there's no leaks in the coolant system. Lastly, the tension and condition of the mower’s fan belt should also be checked.
-
Brakes
Make sure the parking brake and foot brake work.
-
Hand Controls
Make sure the shift levers and throttle/choke cables are not stiff, and can move smoothly.
-
Steering
The spindle and tie rods should be checked for wear, and also greased.
-
Tires
Inflating the tires to the proper PSI is needed for the highest cut quality. Also checking the tread condition is always good practice. Bald or chopped tires can be a hazard in time.
-
Transmission
Inspect the radiator and transmission cooler for any signs of leaks or damage, ensuring efficient heat dissipation. Additionally, examine the transmission fluid level and quality, noting any burnt odor or discoloration, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for fluid replacement intervals. Lastly, inspect the transmission filter for debris or clogs, and if necessary, replace the filter to maintain optimal fluid flow and overall transmission health.
-
Fluids
Make sure to check for leaks and that all your fluid levels are sufficient. These include: coolant, fuel, engine oil, hydraulic oil, front axle oil, and brake fluid.
